Ants

Ants are one of the most common household pests in Michigan, and one of the most persistent. While seeing a few ants indoors may seem minor, it usually means there is an established nest nearby or inside the structure. Effective ant control isn’t just about killing visible ants. It requires identifying the species, understanding how and where they nest, and using the correct control method to stop the colony at its source.

Below are the most common ant species we encounter in Michigan homes, each with distinct behaviors and control challenges.

Pavement Ants

Overview
Pavement ants are one of the most common ants found around homes in Michigan. They typically nest outdoors but frequently enter homes in search of food.

Behavior
Pavement ants nest under concrete slabs, sidewalks, driveways, patios, and foundation edges. They travel in well-defined trails and are most active during warmer months. Colonies can grow large and often have multiple queens.

How to Identify Them
Pavement ants are small, dark brown to black ants with lighter-colored legs. They are usually seen trailing along foundation lines, garage floors, basements, and kitchen edges.

Why They’re a Pest
They contaminate food, create constant indoor activity, and are difficult to eliminate without treating nesting areas outside. Killing visible ants alone rarely solves the problem.

Odorous House Ants

Overview
Odorous house ants are a frequent indoor nuisance and are known for their ability to nest both inside and outside structures.

Behavior
These ants form large colonies and readily move nests when disturbed. They are strongly attracted to sweet foods and often establish satellite nests inside wall voids, under floors, or near moisture sources.

How to Identify Them
Odorous house ants are small and dark brown to black. When crushed, they release a strong odor often described as rotten coconut or sour.

Why They’re a Pest
Their ability to relocate nests makes them difficult to control without proper baiting. Improper treatments can make infestations worse by spreading colonies throughout the home.

Carpenter Ants

Overview
Carpenter ants are one of the most concerning ant species found in Michigan due to their association with structural damage.

Behavior
They excavate wood to create nesting galleries, preferring damp or previously damaged wood. Colonies often have a main nest outdoors and satellite nests inside structures.

How to Identify Them
Carpenter ants are larger than most household ants and can range from black to reddish-black. Winged ants may be seen indoors during swarming periods.

Why They’re a Pest
While they don’t eat wood, their nesting activity can weaken structural components over time. Carpenter ant activity often indicates moisture issues or hidden damage.

Pharaoh Ants

Overview
Pharaoh ants are less common in single-family homes but can be extremely difficult to eliminate when present.

Behavior
They form large, interconnected colonies and spread rapidly when disturbed. Spraying them causes colonies to split and relocate, making infestations worse.

How to Identify Them
Pharaoh ants are very small and light yellow to pale brown in color. They are often mistaken for other tiny ant species.

Why They’re a Pest
They require a bait-only control approach. DIY sprays and incorrect treatments can cause widespread infestations throughout a structure.
